Eclipse 2024: The Experience of a Lifetime in Northeastern Ohio

August 11, 2023 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

An image of a solar eclipse where the moon is covering most of the sun. A dark sky and purple, red, and yellow-hued clouds surround the sun.

Just after 3pm on the afternoon of April 8, 2024, for as long as nearly 4 minutes (depending on your location) the moon will completely cover the sun in a swath of northeastern Ohio. The sky will grow dark, the stars will come out, animals will think night has fallen, and it will briefly be safe to look directly at the shadowed sun during this total solar eclipse when the spectacular solar corona will be visible. A total solar eclipse is one of the most amazing astronomical phenomena visible with the naked eye from earth and those in the path of totality will have a front row seat!

Dr. Alex Rudolph, professor of physics and astronomy, at Cal Poly Pomona University in California, will explain the science behind this remarkable phenomenon and will also review some of the amazing astronomical discoveries of recent decades. Using spectacular images from the recently launched JWST Space Telescope, Dr. Rudolph will provide a virtual tour of the universe: from nearby objects in our very own solar system; to spectacular nebula of our own Milky Way Galaxy; to the dramatic collisions of massive galaxies outside our Milky Way; to images of the furthest galaxies ever imaged being born shortly after the universe began.
